{"id":5372,"date":"2015-03-08T17:10:22","date_gmt":"2015-03-08T17:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/?page_id=126"},"modified":"2025-09-27T11:12:59","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T10:12:59","slug":"boyton-marshes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/boyton-marshes\/","title":{"rendered":"Boyton Marshes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Whilst on our survey, we discovered 3 large gun emplacements (at least we think they are gun emplacements!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/boytonmarsh1.jpg\"><img data-dominant-color=\"969376\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #969376;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" data-id=\"12020\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/boytonmarsh1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12020 not-transparent\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/boytonmarsh1.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/boytonmarsh1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They are on Boyton Marshes in the parishof Boyton, Suffolk (TM\/639\/247 approx) and are much larger than the common pillboxes found throughout this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have serached the Defence of Britain database and they are not recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have also looked through their book and cannot find anything similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These buildings are around 15m in diameter and sit on the marsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orford Ness (with lots of defences on it) is just over the other side of the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, because they are on the marsh and on private land, they are not accessible so we weren\u2019t able to take a closer look.<br>Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are actually the remains of the tank ranges &#8211; practice tank firing at targets deployed from these bunkers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whilst on our survey, we discovered 3 large gun emplacements (at least we think they are gun emplacements!).
