The then unused works was undergoing preservation and some demolition of surrounding attached buildings was being carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closer inspection showed that the the box appeared to have two slotted openings (similar to loopholes), one in each visible side, and a rear opening rusting steel door, the roof appeared to be made of a concrete slab construction and a small metal chimney\u00c2&nbsp; was also visible on one side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the details listed below it was identified by Austin Ruddy as an ARP or firewatchers post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general construction being like the standard civilian ARP building, with cheaper bricks and the overhanging concrete roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rear opening steel door which was a feature of ARP type buildings, which would have also given some protection from shrapnel and exploding incendiary devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the small chimney was most probably for a small stove to give some form of comfort for fire watchers on cold nights!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The works may have been used in the war effort and so a possible enemy target ( i was informed by a local that parts of the R101 airship had been made there).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/blackburnworksfirewatcherspost31.jpg\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b5b6af\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b5b6af;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-id=\"12116\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/blackburnworksfirewatcherspost31.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12116 not-transparent\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/blackburnworksfirewatcherspost31.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/blackburnworksfirewatcherspost31-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of its location on top of a very tall and strong building the post would given a clear view over the surrounding Godalming area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/godalming-fire-watchers-post\/godalming-fire-watchers-post-2\/\"><img data-dominant-color=\"9c9388\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #9c9388;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" data-id=\"12117\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Godalming-Fire-Watchers-Post.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12117 not-transparent\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Godalming-Fire-Watchers-Post.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.pillbox-study-group.org.uk\/gazetteersubsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Godalming-Fire-Watchers-Post-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2005 the building has been converted into apartments and the roof top structure was removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-4590\">Interesting comparison taken in 2010 showing a conservatory where the Fire watchers post once was.
