Ljubljana ‘Ring of Wire’

In 1942 the Italians had surrounded the city with a ‘Ring of Wire’ later they fortified the road junctions with pillboxes and roadblocks. Almost all the defences had been removed just one or two pillboxes remain. The ‘Ring of Wire’ is protected as a National Park it is in fact a walk way also known as the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship.

On the first day we make our way into the mountains to visit two casemate bunkers of the ‘Rupnik Line’ the entrance we passed back along the road now filled in. The Italians shelled the area in 1941 and many of the defences were destroyed along the ridge of Žirovski vrh, which is dotted with machine gun pillboxes some completed and others under construction.
