BRITISH ANTI-INVASION DEFENCES

1940-1945

A Pocket Reference Guide

By the summer of 1940, all that stood between the German Army and the invasion of the British Isles was the English Channel - or so it seemed.

From the Spring of 1940, with the start of the German Blitzkrieg advances, it suddenly became apparent to the British authorities that a German invasion of Britain was now more than a mere possibility. Hastily, the construction of a network of anti-invasion defences was begun. Sited at road junctions, railway embankments, alongside canals, on farms, estates and along the beaches many of these structures, commonly called `pillboxes` soon became common sights throughout the country.

Despite the passing of sixty years, and the effects of development, erosion and even ignorance, many of these structures still survive. This book is intended to provide a brief and concise insight into the history of `pillboxes` and other defences, their design and the reasons for their existence. This book is packed full of useful information and will be of enormous interest to local historians, students and military enthusists, those interested in the `home Front` during the Second world War, as well as the generally curious members of the general public.
