SAN ANASTASIA BEACH

Whilst on the beach one day I spotted what to my untrained eye looked like a pillbox. I went back the next day with my camera and took the attached pictures which I thought may be of interest to PSG members.

It is located on top of a small sand dune overlooking the beach at a place called San Anastasia. This is near a small village called Salto Di Fondi which in turn is about 7km south of the town of Terracina which is in between Rome and Naples. Sorry I haven't got a clue of the map reference.

I would guess that it was about 8' - 10' square but with a triangular extension off to one corner at what I assume is the rear.

This shows the view from the beach looking up towards the pillbox.

This gives a closer view from the same angle.

This shows a close up of what appears to be the only "loophole".

The view through the "loophole".

The back looks totally open and there does not appear to be any othe door or means of access.

A view of the roof which is damaged and appears to show rail track used as reinforcing.

The view from the roof looking over the beach in the direction of Terracina.

Another view of the roof.

It looks like there is no foundation for the pillbox and it is as though it has just been dropped on top of the dune. On the other hand it may be that the sand has simply blown away from underneath. Again I don't know enough to say - what would be typical ?

The pillbox appears to be on its own with no evidence of any others in the area, either on the beach or further inland
