MAIDEN NEWTON AT WAR WEEKEND

MAIDEN NEWTO TYPE 22 PILLBOX RESTORATION

As part of the `Maiden Newton` at War Weekend members of the Pillbox Study Group carried out a restoration of a Type 22 Pillbox on the edge of the village.

At the start of the exercise it was impossible to see the structure let alone get inside.

GRAHAM MATTHEWS cuts back the undergrowth with a petrol strimmer.

RICHARD DREW removing the first debris.

SHAUN CHURCHILL uncovering the first loophole.

Graham Matthews & Shaun Churchill trying to open up the entrance.

TIM DENTON posing for the camera!

RICHARD TAYLOR (left) & COLIN POMEROY (entrance)

GAVIN MATTHEWS working on the railway cutting side

Rolling back 60 years on leafmold!

The team taking a break.

CAROL MATTHEWS (right) provided the excellent tea and bacon sandwiches!

Checking out the inside which was full of water and stones.

Almost there!

Notice the damaged blockwork on the protected entrance wall.

It is thought that tractors using the lane have probably made contact with the structure over the last decade.

Visitors to the Maiden Newton at War Weekend checkout our work and get an explanation of the pillbox location etc
