Sturdy concrete pillbox made with
wood shuttering. In pretty good condition, approx. 15`9" x 10`9".
Access possible via footpath from north farm to low newton by the sea. It is
also missing from mike osbournes list of similarly constructed pillboxes in his
very good book "pillboxes of britain and ireland". There are a number
of these pb`s dotted around the area at Tugghall, Embleton, Sportsmans pub, Saddlershall,
New Shoreston, West Fleetham farm, Beal farm and Dunstan Steads with a further
one under the spotting tower at Goswick. Wall thickness approx.15".

A stone building at right angles to the anglers arms pub. Two large mg embrasures on the east facing wall. Easy access you can park right next to the building. Point of intrest the embrasures do not cover the bridge over the coquet but the eastern approach from the coast. Nearby there is a "lozenge" pillbox on the hill opposite the pub which does cover the bridge and is part of the coquet stopline. 22/3/10 |
