Following on from his recent information on Wartime Concrete in Berkshire, Philip came across this carving in a tree close to the ‘mystery building’ illustrated previously. He already knew that the 501st & 101st Airborne had been stationed in the area during the run up to D-Day and he proceeded to investigate the name on the tree.
Amazingly, he has tracked down LESTER BIRKY to the United States, where at the age of 75 he is still farming. Having written a letter explaining his find Lester has replied and soon we hope to be able to give lots more information on the buildings and the man himself.
