England
This pillbox has now been opened up after the adjoining garden was extended over the roof. The area behind the pillbox has been cleared of sand to reveal the fact that the pillbox is a double Machine gun pillbox with each compartment having a separate door covered by it’s own […]
Several Anti- invasion defences were constructed around Seaton Delaval Hall, during WW2, such was the fear of invasion from the North Sea after the fall of Norway. These defensive measures around Seaton Delaval Hall included a low-level defensive stone wall, with rifle loops located east of Deer park. ‘L’ shaped […]
Built of concrete filled sandbags, these pillboxes are known as “Beehives”
Shortly after these pictures were taken in September 2010, the extremely bad winter of 2010 caused a build up of snow on the roof of this barn, causing it to collapse at the height of the loopholes.
Loopholed wall protecting Northern approach to Alnwick. Pictures taken in 2006.
A shellproof pillbox located on railway land – so don’t be tempted to trespass there. These pictures from 2006.
Very fine example of a pillbox disguised as a small stone cottage with brick chimney stack and “collapsed” roof. This pillbox is now listed at grade II.
Rectangular pillbox, disguised with stone facing to front and sides and concrete sandbags to rear.
The pictures below were taken shortly after the “Beast from the East” and show how much sand was scoured away by the storm.
These views of the Loopholed wall at Alnwick Cemetery are from 2005 and predate the building of the Sainsburys supermarket and other buildings which now obscure the view of the wall. The pictures below were taken from inside the cemetery in 2006.
Listed as “Probable type 28A pillbox visible on 1946 AP’s facing the bridge. May still exist on the northern edge of the farm yard.” Still extant. Photo’s Mike Anton via PSG website. 51.013328° -0.052078°
Hadston Lozenge 55 1748.12″N 1 3547.20″W Good Condition.
This variant pillbox is circular with three large loopholes. It has a sunken entrance with two staple steps fitted down the shaft. It’s in pretty good condition and graffiti free. It’s almost completely invisible amongst the vegetation.
Once again developers threaten our history, this time it’s a lowly collection of huts that used to be a Prisoner of War camp at Hatfield Heath. A planning application, which is due to be heard on the 6th of June, has been submitted which would see this historic site demolished to […]
Recent Vegetation clearance has revealed more of the AT Cubes at the Low Gates level crossing in Northallerton. [mappress mapid=”1″]
A secret Telephone Exchange and ARP / firewatchers post. What appears to be a Firewatchers / passive defence command bunker. This lookout post goes down 3 floors underground .Inside are, I think, 6 rooms, the remains of the bottom half of a periscope , light up table and swivel chair, […]

Round Pillbox, Harlow Hill. RAF Ouston Thick Fronted Round Pillbox. S0007987
This pillbox closely resembles the standard “Northumberland D Type” but has a shorter side wall. It is completely sealed so no interior shots. The entrance is now at the top of a 30ft drop. It appears that it may have been built on top of a lime kiln which has […]
This pillbox is listed as a Type 24 but when measured it appears not to be it is a very strange shape. The last two pictures show the fancy grilles over a ventilation system. It still has it’s wooden shuttering in place inside the pillbox.
This Type 22 is slightly taller than usual and has a raised floor. There are holes either side of the, blocked up, doorway that indicate there may have been steps with railings fitted originally.
This variant pillbox is circular and brick shuttered, it has two large MG loopholes and a smaller rifle or pistol loop. The entrance is semi sunken and a hawthorn tree makes access very difficult.
Civil Air raid shelter built into bank. entrance hidden by hedge. emergency exit in concrete slab next to building at far end.
Type 22 now preserved in the new housing estate. The grilles on the loopholes look rather out of place but at least it’s still there. This pillbox will shortly be in the middle of a large new housing estate.
PILLBOX (TYPE FW3/22): S0015722 (Extant)
This unusual pillbox was in the grounds of a large Victorian house until that was demolished and replaced by at least 14 modern houses. A planning condition was imposed that the pillbox must be preserved, enhanced and protected during and after the building works. This was done and the pillbox […]
This pillbox used to have a corrugated iron roof structure above as camouflage.
The maps below clearly show this pillbox to be in the location shown on google earth for S0004624. Mike Osborne’s book “Pillboxes of Britain and Ireland” shows a picture on page 148 which appears to be this pillbox but gives a grid ref which matches S0004824. It is possible that […]
