Dover Quad Pillbox

The Dover Quad pillbox has a square plan and is 4m on a side. It has an overhanging concrete slab roof supported on 8 pillars, one at each corner and in the centre of each wall. This creates 8 wide embrasures offering minimal protection to the occupants but very good observation capability. The roof overhang is intended to provide protection from aerial strafing. It’s postulated that these pillboxes predate the FW3 designs and were built quickly at the start of the war to protect the critical port of Dover. They are generally situated in commanding locations which suggest a dual role as observation posts which would also explain the wide embrasure design. There are 24 examples still extant around Dover.
